Frequently Asked Questions
Clear answers for those ready to commit to the mats.
General Questions
What is the Fighting Chance Initiative (FCI)? FCI is a 501(c)(3) public charity that provides youth facing instability with a permanent foundation of resilience through Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ). We identify kids who need an anchor and place them in a high-accountability environment under world-class mentorship.
What is a "Professor" in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu? In BJJ, "Professor" is a title of high respect reserved for Black Belt instructors who have reached a level of experience and authority to lead an academy. It signifies more than just technical skill; it denotes a master who has dedicated decades to the art and is qualified to pass on the lineage. When you address Professor Sarah or Professor George, you are acknowledging their status as elite masters of the "Gentle Art."
Who is eligible for a scholarship? We serve youth who are facing financial barriers, social instability, or a documented lack of consistent mentorship. If a child is on the "sidelines" because of costs or circumstances, our mission is to get them on the mats.
Is this just a "fighting" class? No. We don't teach kids how to fight; we teach them how to stay centered when the world gets loud. BJJ is a laboratory for self-control, problem-solving, and resilience. The physical techniques are the vehicle for building character.
For Applicants & Families
What exactly does the scholarship cover? The scholarship covers 100% of the monthly tuition at our partner academy, Fargo BJJ. It also includes a high-quality Gi (uniform) and all necessary training gear so the scholar starts on day one with a sense of belonging.
What is expected of an FCI scholar? This program is a partnership built on a shared commitment. Scholars are expected to attend at least two classes per week and live by the FCI Code of Conduct—showing respect for coaches, teammates, and the training environment. We don’t require athletic perfection, but we do require a sincere effort to learn and grow. The scholarship is maintained as long as the student remains dedicated to the journey and the community.
How long is the program? We require an initial six-month commitment. Resilience isn't built in a week; it takes sustained discipline to see the results.
Where does the training take place? All training happens at our partner facility, Fargo BJJ Academy, located at 1335 2nd Ave N, Fargo, ND 58102. Scholars learn under the direction of Professor Sarah Andersch.

Can I sponsor a specific child? While we manage the scholarship pool to ensure equity and privacy, you can donate in amounts that cover specific outcomes (e.g., $1,548 for a full year of tuition or $99 for a full gear package).
